Introduction

In this cooperative deck-building game, you take on the role of Aang and his allies. Together, you travel through the Four Kingdoms, defeat enemies, complete exciting missions, and work toward Aang’s ultimate destiny: bringing balance to the world as the Avatar.

With accessible rules and an epic storyline, this is the game for fans of adventure, strategy, and cooperation.

Let’s get it on the table

Place the game board in the center so that all players can see everything clearly.

Place the following stacks in their designated places on the board. Shuffle the Fire Nation cards and the Adversary cards.

The Support cards are divided into Water bending, Air bending, and General support, at least at the start of the game. We won’t reveal what happens later, but the board gives you a hint.

Take the Objective cards and place them unsorted in the storyline with the image facing up under the ship-shaped Fire Nation tracker.

Each player chooses a hero. You can choose from Aang, Katara, Sokka, or Appa. Each hero has their own starting deck (usually 10 cards), a Hero card, and a reference card. It is also important to know that
o Aang starts with water and air bending cards.
o Katara starts with water bending, and Appa starts with air bending.
o Sokka starts without bending cards, but with his whalebone club as a base.

Let’s play

In Aang’s Destiny, you play together as the heroes from Avatar. You win the game if you defeat all opponents and complete all objective cards. However, if the Fire Nation token reaches the end of the Tracking Pad, Avatar Aang is captured and you immediately lose the game. The game is played in turns, with players taking turns as the active hero. Each turn consists of five steps:

1. Reveal and Resolve Fire Nation Card(s)
First, check the position of the Fire Nation token on the Tracking Pad. This determines how many Fire Nation cards you must reveal.

2. Activate Adversary Abilities
Each adversary has special abilities. Some occur every turn, while others are triggered by Fire Nation cards or specific events. These effects must be resolved before you begin your actions.

3. Play Cards and Take Actions
a. Play Cards and Gain Resources:
Play Support cards from your hand to attack, gather resources, or trigger other effects. Any tokens or bonuses you earn this turn are placed on your player board. Keep in mind: you cannot carry anything over to the next turn!
b. Attack:
Use your attack tokens to defeat adversaries. Once you’ve placed enough tokens on an Adversary card—equal to its health—that adversary is defeated.
c. Complete Objective Cards:
Some objectives require specific resources or actions. Once all required tokens are assigned and the actions completed, the objective is fulfilled.
d. Buy New Cards:
Use Purpose points (gained through cards) to purchase new Support cards from the market, as long as you have points to spend or cards to buy. Purchased cards are placed directly into your discard pile.

4. End Your Turn
At the end of your turn, first check whether the Fire Nation token has reached the final space on the Tracking Pad. If it has, the game ends immediately and you lose. If not, check if you’ve defeated an adversary or completed an objective. For each defeated adversary, draw a new Adversary card and place it on the board. If you’ve completed an Objective card, immediately reveal the next one.

Next, refill the market if there are any empty spaces. For Bending cards, draw replacements of the same element. For general Support cards, draw from the Support deck. Each slot in the market must contain a unique card, if a duplicate appears, stack it and continue drawing until each space is different.

Once the market is refreshed, gather all cards you played this turn and place them in your discard pile. Any unused tokens are removed from the game, unless you played cards that gave tokens to other heroes, in that case, those players may keep the tokens for their next turn. Finally, draw five new cards from your deck. If your deck is empty, shuffle your discard pile to form a new draw pile.

Now the next player becomes the active hero, and play continues.

Let’s dive in some extra information for playing this great game!

Completing objective cards
To complete an objective card, heroes must first place all required tokens before performing additional actions. Once all conditions are met, you immediately receive the reward and discard the card. At the start of the next turn, place the new objective card face up on the board. Some objective cards provide additional reward cards, which are added to hero or support decks. Tokens may also be placed directly on objective cards if a card or effect normally provides such a token. However, you may not exchange lives for tokens, and certain enemy effects may block the acquisition of tokens or health benefits.

Your hero’s health
Certain effects from opponents and Fire Nation cards cause your health to decrease, while Support cards and rewards can restore your health. Your health is tracked with a token on your player board. Unless otherwise noted, health benefits only apply to the active player. If an effect says that “a hero” gains health, the active player chooses which hero that is.

If your health reaches zero, you become stunned. You then perform the following steps:

At the end of your turn, you fully recover and reset your health to the maximum (usually 10). You cannot gain any additional health or tokens this turn, but you may still place tokens on objective cards if a card allows it. Remove all stored tokens from your player board.

Discard half of your hand cards, rounded down. If a card has an effect when you discard it, that effect still activates. Move the Fire Nation token one step forward, and if it is your turn, you may still play the rest of your cards.

Tracking Pad and Fire Nation progression
The Tracking Pad shows the progress of the Fire Nation. When the token reaches the last space, the game ends immediately and you lose. Whenever an opponent’s effect or Fire Nation card indicates it, the token moves forward. Certain Support cards or rewards can also move the token backward.

Support Cards & Market
Support cards can run out, both in the general deck and in the bending decks. When that happens, simply continue with the cards that are still available in other decks and your existing decks. New cards will become available again later through the next box in the campaign.

The game ends

The game can end in two ways:

The Fire Nation wins
Does the Fire Nation token reach the end of the Tracking Pad? Then Avatar Aang is captured and you lose the game immediately. Restart the game and try again!

The heroes win
You defeat all opponents and complete all objective cards. You have taken an important step toward restoring balance to the world. Now open Box 2 and follow the instructions in this box.
Please note: some cards can be used for multiple games, while objective cards are only meant for one game.

Final Conclusion & rating

Weight: 2.00/ 5
Replayability: 7
Our rating: 7,5 out of 10 dices

Without giving too much away (because spoilers, we don’t like those!), we can already say: Avatar: The Last Airbender – Aang’s Destiny is another delightful deck-building game that immediately feels right at the table.

As a fan of Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle, I was immediately enthusiastic and heard very good stories about it at Spiel, and although Avatar: The Last Airbender naturally has a completely different theme and revolves around different characters and powers, it feels surprisingly familiar in terms of gameplay. Have you played Toy Story: Obstacles & Adventures or Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle before? Then you know roughly what to expect: smooth gameplay, clear rules, and enough variety in the different boxes to keep you surprised.

What makes this game extra fun are the different powers that the characters have. Yes, that means a few minor adjustments to the rules, but you’ll get the hang of them in no time. And then the fun really begins: after you win, you get to discover the next box! Each new chapter brings new surprises and challenges.

And don’t worry if you haven’t seen the movies or series (yet) (like us), even without prior knowledge, this is a super cool game that is just fun to play. Everything fits perfectly within the theme and the atmosphere is great. We have already started enthusiastically and can’t wait to continue playing.
