You do this by crafting instruments, organizing performances, completing repairs, keeping patrons satisfied, earning public awards, and securing important positions within the orchestra.

After the sixth round, the game moves into final scoring, where players can earn additional prestige from personal objectives, First Chairs, specialized workers, and remaining resources.

Each round consists of two phases:

Planning Phase

Resolution Phase

After the sixth round, the game ends.

At the start of each round, resolve all start-of-round effects. Then, move the patience track of each active Patron one step to the right. For every new position reached, immediately gain the displayed reward. After that, players may place up to two Instrument cards from their hand onto the Roughing Bench.

Planning Phase
During the Planning Phase, players take turns placing exactly one Worker at a time. Workers are placed face down on locations on the main board or on spaces within their own Workshop. Multiple Workers may be assigned to the same location.

Additionally, players may assign up to three Apprentices to a Worker. Each Apprentice increases that Worker’s skill value by one.

Once all Workers have been placed, the Resolution Phase begins.

Resolution Phase
Locations are activated one at a time. If multiple Workers occupy the same location, priority must first be determined.

A Worker’s skill value is calculated by adding the number of the Worker itself and any assigned Apprentices. The Worker with the highest skill value takes priority. In case of a tie, the player who placed their Worker first wins priority.

Each Worker then performs their action individually.

Market
Once per Resolution Phase, each player may visit the Market. This does not require placing a Worker.

At the Market, players can:

Buy resources

Sell resources

Hire Apprentices

Advance on the Performance Track

Advance on the Craft Track

Resource prices change each round when a new Market card is revealed. By choosing a Patron card and placing it on your player board, you immediately receive the placement bonus shown on the card. If you are not looking for a new Patron, you can also gain Inspiration or recruit an Apprentice here. Stronger Workers are especially effective in the Salon. From skill level 4 onwards, they can keep a Patron satisfied for longer by moving their patience back and immediately receiving an additional gift.

Guild
The Guild is where you gather new blueprints for building instruments. Here, you add Instrument cards to your hand, which can later be moved to your Workshop. If you prefer to collect additional resources, you can choose to take a piece of metal instead. An experienced Worker also provides an additional resource of your choice and allows you to immediately place an Instrument blueprint from your hand onto the Roughing Bench, helping you start construction faster.

Perform
When visiting Perform, you showcase the quality of your work by giving a performance. You choose an available Performance card and use dice, Worker skill, Apprentices, and potentially Inspiration to achieve the highest possible score. The better your result, the more money and prestige you earn. Successful performances can also secure a place in the orchestra and help satisfy your Patrons.

If you do not want to perform, you can instead collect animal resources here. Workers with a skill level of 4 or higher also advance on the Performance Track, making future performances even more powerful.

Repair
At Repair, you focus on restoring instruments. By providing the required materials, you immediately gain prestige. Successful repairs also earn you a place in the orchestra and can be used to fulfill Patron requirements. Alternatively, you can simply collect wood here for future projects. A skilled Worker also advances you on the Craft Track, making your Workshop more efficient over time. Inspiration can be useful here to help cover missing materials.

Balcony
The Balcony focuses on reputation and recognition. Here, you can claim public Awards when you meet the required conditions. These Awards not only provide prestige but often unlock permanent benefits as well. Alternatively, you can earn money or recruit new Apprentices. The Balcony also plays an important role in determining player order. Workers who perform best here ensure their owner gets to act earlier in the following round. A strong Worker also provides progress on the Reputation Track.

Workshop Locations
Your Workshop locations are only available to you.

Roughing Bench
The Roughing Bench represents the first step in the instrument-building process. Here, you pay the initial materials for an instrument and then move the card to the Finishing Bench. Workers with sufficient skill provide additional Inspiration and may even reduce the amount of materials required. This is where rough ideas slowly begin to take shape.

Finishing Bench
At the Finishing Bench, instruments are brought to completion. After paying the final materials, you immediately gain the instrument’s prestige value and place an Instrument token in the orchestra.

This allows you to compete for valuable First Chairs and earn additional bonuses. Completed instruments can also be offered to Patrons to fulfill their requests.

Experienced Workers make the process more efficient by reducing material costs and can even double the orchestra bonus gained.

Completing Patrons
Patrons are much more than just objectives you complete for points. Once you have fulfilled all the requirements of a Patron, you immediately gain the displayed amount of prestige and advance one step on the Reputation Track.

The Patron then leaves your player board, creating space for a new client. However, the most interesting part is that the card is flipped over and remains available as a permanent bonus for the rest of the game. As you complete more Patrons, your personal engine continues to grow stronger throughout the game.

The Different Tracks
Throughout the game, you can advance on three different tracks. While each track has its own focus, they all help your family become more skilled and efficient.

Performance Track
The Performance Track focuses entirely on your musical development. Advancing on this track makes your performances more reliable and powerful. You gain access to better dice, additional opportunities to reroll dice, and eventually even specialized Workers that provide new advantages for your strategy.

Players who invest in this track will find that performances become an increasingly valuable source of both money and prestige.

Craft Track
The Craft Track revolves around instrument building. As you progress, your Workers become more efficient at your Workshop. This allows you to prepare instruments faster and eventually even build or complete multiple instruments with a single action. Specialized Workers also become available here, unlocking new possibilities.

For players who enjoy focusing on crafting instruments, this track can be extremely valuable.

Reputation Track
The Reputation Track represents how well-known and respected your family has become.

Higher Reputation gives you access to better cards without additional costs, provides extra points when completing instruments, and creates new opportunities to claim public Awards.

Players who complete many Patrons and frequently visit the Balcony will often make significant progress on this track.

The Orchestra
The Orchestra is one of the central elements of Luthier. This is where the results of your efforts come together. Instruments, successful performances, and completed repairs are all placed in this shared play area. Many spaces contain a so-called First Chair position. Whoever claims one of these positions immediately receives a bonus and also gains valuable end-game points as long as they maintain that position.

The competition for these positions creates an enjoyable layer of interaction between players. Instruments have a special status here, as they can replace existing Performance and Repair tokens occupying a First Chair.

Rare instruments are even more valuable because they always keep their own First Chair position. Throughout the six rounds, the Orchestra gradually becomes a visual representation of all the achievements players have accomplished.

End of the Round
Once all actions have been completed, the board is prepared for the next round. The new turn order is determined based on the Workers sent to the Balcony. Used Workers return to their owners, and any newly unlocked specialized Workers are assigned. After that, the Market is refreshed, new cards are revealed, and the Round marker advances one step.

During rounds three and five, your family business also grows further, giving each player an additional Worker. The theme of building instruments during the golden age of classical music is not something you encounter every day in board games. At the same time, this means it is a theme you really need to enjoy if you want to fully immerse yourself in the experience. The artwork is beautifully designed and contributes enormously to the atmosphere. The illustrations are elegant and perfectly capture the combination of craftsmanship, music, and prestige that the game aims to create. But the quality of the components deserves just as much praise. The large number of cards, tokens, resources, and individual player boards create an impressive table presence.

Fortunately, Luthier is not just beautiful, it is also highly functional. After a few turns, the connections between all the different systems become clear, and the game starts to flow surprisingly smoothly. What makes Luthier truly stand out is the way all of its systems are interconnected. Almost everything you do has consequences across multiple areas. Building an instrument does not only provide prestige, but can also satisfy a Patron, earn you a First Chair, and contribute towards a personal objective. This makes every action you take feel meaningful and valuable.

Worker placement is deeply integrated into the game. The system with numbered Workers and Apprentices is cleverly designed and creates many interesting decisions. Do you send your strongest Worker to an important location to guarantee priority? Or do you save them for a crucial action on your own Workshop? These are choices you will face every round and at every location.

We also really enjoyed the patience system for Patrons. You cannot simply make endless plans for later. Your clients expect results and constantly put pressure on you. This creates a great balance between long-term strategy and immediate priorities. Sometimes you are carefully building towards your perfect strategy, only for an impatient Patron to force you to change your plans. Wait too long, and your Patron will leave, taking their potential benefits with them.

The three different tracks add another layer of strategy. The Craft, Performance, and Reputation Tracks all feel useful and rewarding. So far, we have not found a single dominant strategy. You will need to make progress on each track in some way, but depending on the situation, you can choose where to place your focus. Some players will concentrate on building instruments, while others may focus more on performances or collecting awards.

The competition for First Chairs creates a fun level of player interaction without becoming overly aggressive. You are mainly focused on your own puzzle, but you are constantly keeping an eye on which spaces are occupied and where valuable bonuses can be gained.

The rules are extensive, and we cannot ignore that. This review may be quite detailed, but we wanted to give you a clear picture of what Luthier actually offers. New players should expect a substantial rules explanation, but once you get started, you will quickly notice that everything begins to fall into place. The first game can feel overwhelming at times, but thanks to the logical structure, after one or two rounds the connections between all the systems become much clearer.

The playtime may seem long, but remember that this is still an expert game. These types of games are not designed to be finished within 30 minutes. Take your time, enjoy the process, and let yourself be immersed in Luthier.

The replayability is very high. The combination of different Patrons, personal objectives, public Awards, instruments, and Workers ensures that no two games will feel the same. Luthier is a fantastic choice for players who enjoy engine building, worker placement, strategic action combinations, and a truly unique theme. This game is not only a beauty on the table but also on your game closet.

🙏 Thanks to Paverson
